The Big Year 2016: A Very Special Year in the Life of the Royal Shakespeare Company

Documenting the RSC’s work in 2016, the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, The Big Year is packed with photographs and stories that give an insight into what it took to create this celebration of Shakespeare’s legacy.

2016 marked the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. To commemorate the occasion, the RSC embarked on an extraordinary series of work, from the international tour of King & Country: Shakespeare’s Great Cycle of Kings, which included the Company’s first ever major tour to China, to the ground-breaking production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation, which toured the UK with a company of professional actors working alongside local amateurs. Shakespeare’s birthday was commemorated by an extravaganza that celebrated Shakespeare's words and his enduring influence on all performance art forms and was broadcast live on BBC 2. Alongside this was a full range of productions of work by Shakespeare, his contemporaries and new playwrights, events, education work and the reopening of The Other Place and the refurbished Swan Wing.

This book celebrates this remarkable year with photos and stories from behind the scenes. Directors, actors and RSC staff give a unique insight into what it took to create this celebration of Shakespeare’s legacy. The Big Year is both a memento of an exceptional year and a fascinating view of how the RSC operates, from the tensions of organising a live televised broadcast to the planning involved in transporting 732 costumes, 10 prosthetic noses and 1 fake roast chicken half way around the world…
